Good Trade at Abergavenny for Welsh Black cattle


The last of the Welsh Black Cattle Society’s pedigree cattle sales, which was held on Friday 20 November at Abergavenny market, witnessed 41 animals forwarded and 41 animals sold.  ‘This is rare as usually there are a few animals who do not reach the vendors price tag and they choose to take them home!’ said a very happy Society Chief Executive, Mr Andrew James after a successful day to end the 2009 calendar of sales.

 

Leading with the highest priced animal of the day was the Champion Maiden Heifer, Meadowsweet Lassie 3rd, who consequently also won the Overall Breed Champion at the pre-sale show.  Selling for 1,500gns the 17 month old prize winning heifer, sired by Iwrch Blackjack 3rd (Vol 96) and out of Meadowsweet Lassie (Vol 93) was bought by Philip and Andrew Danson, Tanybwlch, Betws Gwerfyl Goch, Corwen, Denbighshire.  The heifer, bred and sold by Peter and Tanya Bowen, Meadowsweet, Tirlan Farm, Treharris in Mid-Glamorgan, was the first of 2 animals sold by the Bowen family.
The Reserve Champion Maiden Heifer, Meadowsweet Charlotte 4th at 16 months of age was sold for 1,250gns.  The heifer, sired by Irwch Blackjack 3rd and out of Meadowsweet Charlotte 3rd, was bought by Mr &Mrs M Evans, Ystrad Newydd, Cefn Coch near Welshpool.  Mr &Mrs Evans are starting a new herd of pedigree Welsh Black cattle and bought a total of 4 females at the sale.
At 1,450gns a polled maiden heifer, Cathedine Melody, bred and sold by Messrs DM Davies & Son of Lower Cathedine, Bwlch, Brecon, was bought by Mr JT Bowen, Pencoedcae Farm, Princetown, Tredegar.  The 19 month old heifer was sired by Morlais Merlin (Vol 94) and out of Cathedine Grace (Vol 92).  The Davies family sold another two maiden heifers both of similar description, each selling for 1,300gns a head and one of these were again bought by Mr Bowen from Trdegar.
Mr Jonathan Pugh of Ty-Talgarth, Nantymoel, Bridgend sold Ty-Talgarth Nia (Vol 97) for 1,350gns.  The 21 month old maiden heifer was sired by Fedw Bill (Vol 93) and out of Ty-Talgarth Deborah (Vol 94) and was bought by Mr Tony Hood, 9 Chipping Garden, Wooton-Under-Edge in Gloucestershire.  Mr Pugh sold another two maidens, Ty-Talgarth Carol (Vol 97) a 1st Prize winner and Ty-Talgarth Emille (Vol 97) a 3rd Prize winner for 1,300gns a head.  Both heifers were bought by Mr Trevor Davies, Lasgarn Farm, Trevethin, Pontypool in Gwent.
The highest priced yearling heifer Llanarth Bertha (Vol 97) at 11 months of age was sold for 800gns.  Bred and sold by Mr L Bigley, The Quakers Farm, Michaelchurch Escley in Hereford.  The well bred heifer was bought by Mr D.W Pratter, Penlan Fawr, Cwmsychpant, Llanybydder.
The heifer sired by Tywi Carwyn (Vol 96) and out of Llanarth Bronwen 3rd (Vol 94) was out of seven yearlings forwarded by the Bigley family which averaged 597gns /head for the 7 weaned heifers.
Mr Pratter bought 5 of the 7 Llanarth heifers.

Conclusion

A day of consistent trade produced a good sale atmosphere and was sure to please all concerned reported the Society Chief Executive Mr Andrew James.
