Welsh Blacks kick off autumn sale season at Dolgellau


Over 200 head of mature cattle went under the hammer at Dolgellau at the Welsh Black Cattle Society's first pedigree store sale of the autumn (19 September).

Despite the summer's poor weather conditions the cattle were excellently presented by the vendors. Trade was brisk with leading Pedigree breeders showing the way, and buyers proving the ongoing popularity of Welsh Blacks in the area.

The sale of Welsh Black Cattle was sponsored by Tithebarn c/o Regional Manager Rheinallt Williams, with the results as follows:

£30 Voucher awarded to the highest priced Pen of 4 or more Steers

Four pedigree steers aged between 23-24months and weighing at 610kg a head were sold for £902 each. They were bred by Mrs Gwenfair Jones & Sons, Hafod yr Esgob, Bala, Gwynedd.

£20 Voucher awarded to the highest priced Pair of Steers

A pair of 25 month old steers weighing 550kg a head were sold for £822 a head. They were bred by Mr Meirion Botwood, Pontrhydfendigaid, Ystrad Meurig, Ceredigion.

£20 Voucher awarded to the highest priced Single Steer

At £838 a 17 month old single steer weighing at 570kg was sold by HT & M Jones, Prysgau Ganol, Llwyngwril, Gwynedd.

£20 Voucher awarded to the highest priced Heifer

Sold for £658, and weighing at 485kgs the 18 month-old heifer was bred and sold by Ms Emily Evans, Tynshettin, Llanwddyn, Owestry.

£10 Voucher awarded to the highest priced Animal (pence per kilo)

At £1.65 a kilo the highest priced steer or heifer went to a group of five pedigree steers which were bred and sold by Mr RT Richards, Bron-llan, Llansannan, Denbigh.

The next Welsh Black Cattle Society pedigree store sale will be at Llandovery on Friday, October 3 with entries in excess of 120 animals.
