Champion Bull leads at Dolgellau Sale
The spring pedigree Welsh Black Cattle Society sale, held on Friday 7 May at Dolgellau market, witnessed 18 animals sold by auctioneers Farmers Marts (RG Jones) Ltd.
Champion bull at the pre-sale show was Gwern-Cynyddion Erddyn 28th which fetched 4,000gns. Bred and sold by Mr Robert John Evans, Gwern Caernyddion, Llanbedr the 27½ month old bull, weighing 900kgs, was bought by Messrs Evans, Cwrt-y-Llan, Pentrefoelas, Denbighshire. Mr Evans went on to sell Gwern-Cynyddion Erddyn 31st, a 23 month old bull, for 3,000gns. The younger bull was a 3rd prize winner in the same class as the champion and weighed 840kgs. The bull was bought by Messrs Roberts, Gwyniasau, Llithfaen near Pwllheli. At 2,800gns, Caerynwch Major 5th, a 23 month old bull weighing 710kgs, was bred and sold by Mr TW Williams, Caerynwch Farm, Dolgellau. The home bred bull was bought by Mr DH Roberts, Bryndreiniog, Penybont Fawr, Oswestry, Salop. Finally in the bull section, a 2nd prize winner in the pre-sale show ring, Gerddi-Bluog Addewid 2nd was sold for 2,600gns. Bred and sold by Mrs Jessica Evans-Williams, Gerddi Bluog, Harlech. The bull, weighing 790kgs was sold to Mrs Gwenfair Jones & Sons, Hafod-yr-Esgob Isaf, Bala. Highest priced female was the Champion Maiden Heifer, Brynllech Gwenno 5th which sold for 1,280gns. The 22 month old heifer, bred and sold by Mr Rhodri P Jones, Brynllech Uchaf, Llanuwchllyn near Bala, was bought by Ms Emily Evans, Tynshettin, Llanwddyn, Oswestry, Salop. Mr Jones sold another maiden heifer of similar description for 1,020gns. This heifer was bought by a new member to the Society, Mr James Hooton, Gwydryn Hir, Brynsiencyn, Anglesey. The highest priced heifer, at under 12 months, was the youngest animal at the sale namely Gwern-Cynyddion Nans, selling for 600gns. The 11 month old heifer was bought by Mr I Evans, Top-y-Rhos Farm, Pontybodkyn near Mold, Flintshire. Gwern-Cynyddion Nans was bred and sold by Mr Robert J Evans, Gwern Caernyddion, Llanbedr who sold 4 yearling heifers, 3 of which were bought by Mr I Evans, Top-y-Rhos Farm. Sale Averages 7 Bulls over 18 months averaged 2529gns/head 5 heifers, 2-3 years old averaged 754gns/head 4 heifers, 1-2 years old averaged 873gns/head 2 yearling heifers averaged 560gns/head 18 Animals in total averaged 1,449gns/head With fewer animals sold in the sale, as compared to the same sale last year, the total average price was ironically on par per price to 2009.
