Jones’ take two champion awards


The retiring Society President Mr Trefor Jones, Cwmcae, Bow Street, Ceredigion won  the Champion Bull award and his son Mr Huw Jones, Llety Cynnes, Bow Street won the Champion Maiden Heifer award at the pre-sale show held on Friday 28 May 2010 at Llandovery Market.

 

The Champion bull, Cwmcae Addewid 3rd, Vol 99, a 25 month old bull, was sold for 3,500gns to Rhodri Traherne of Coedarhydyglyn near Cardiff.  The home bred bull was sired by Neuadd Addewid 63rd (AI) and out of Cwmcae Eirliw 97th.

Sharing the top price of 3,500gns was the reserve champion bull Waundderw Ben, Vol 90, at 22½ months of age.  The bull was sired by Brysgaga Erddyn 42nd (AI) and out of Dolhelfa Sonia.  Bred and sold by Mr Geoff Jones, 44 Daffodil Wood, Builth Wells and bought by Mr Allan Price, Dyfydfa Farm, Gwynfe, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire.

 The third prize bull in the pre-sale show was sold for 2,400gnsCoedllys Medwyn, Vol 99, at 25 months of age was sired by Gorse James and out of Coedllys Avril 2nd.  Bred and sold by Mr &Mrs William Davies, Brynglas, Ponterwyd, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, he was bought by Mr Phillip Heard, Meldon Farm, Okehampton in Devon.

The highest priced female of the day was the Reserve Champion, Castell Fanny 166th, Vol 96, sired by Peiran Pedro and out of Castell Fanny 120th, Vol 90.  The home bred 2½ year old in-calf heifer that sold for 1,600gns was bred and sold by Messrs G&J Davies, Maes-y-Castell, Taliaris, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire.  Purchasing the prize winning female was Messrs GC Hardcore, Lower Llanerch, Trinant, Crumlin near Newport in South Wales.

The Champion female was Llandre Eirian, Vol 96, which sold for 1,500gns.  Bred and sold by Messrs MV & GM James, Penybryn, Henllan Amgoed, Whitland the in-calf heifer was purchased by Mr Eifion Jones, Ffynonlwyd, Llangynnog, Carmarthenshire.  The heifer was sired by Graig Goch Berwyn 8th (AI) and out of Brysgaga Eirian 33rd.

 The 3rd prize winner was Castell Fanny 171st, Vol 97.  The in-calf heifer from Messrs G&J Davies, Maes-y-Castell was bought by Messrs MJ Phillips, Maesnant, Old Hall, Llanidloes, Powys.  This heifer was sold for 1,250gns.  The Davies family sold another in-calf heifer, Castell Seren 275th, Vol 97, for 1,100gns which was bought by Mr Eifion Jones, Ffynonlwyd.

 The Reserve Champion maiden heifer was Cennen Lil 41st , Vol 97 that sold for 1,250gns.  Bred and sold by JR &DH Francis, Tynywaun, Gwynfe, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire the 25 month old heifer was bought by Mr Allan Price, Dyfydfa Farm, Gwynfe.  The heifer was sired by Cerdin Arwel, Vol 93 and out of Cennen Lil 36th, Vol 92 and was one of thirteen maiden heifers sold at the sale from the Cennen Herd.

 The Francis’, Tynywaun sold another 1st prize winner in her class Cennen Doli 16th, Vol 97, which was sold for 1,100gns.  Sired by  Cerdin Arwel, Vol 93 and out of Cennen Doli 14th the heifer was bought by Mr &Mrs Paul & Annwyn Beswick, Pant Farm, Meidrim in Carmarthenshire.

 Another 1st prize winner, Lluest Eira 9th, Vol 97 was sold for 1,200gns.  The organic and well bred heifer from Mr Emrys Jones, Lluest Wen, Comins Coch, Machynlleth, Powys was bought by Mr Huw Evans, Brynmarlais, Llansadwrn, Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire.

 Finally, to complete the sale report the Champion Maiden Heifer Gwarcwm Ester 18th, Vol 98 from Mr DHuw Jones, Llety Cynnes, Bow Street, Ceredigion was sold for 1,100gns.  The 14 month old heifer was bought by the pre-sale show judge Mr Gerald Thomas, Llechwedd, Tyn Lon, Holyhead, Anglesey.

 Summary:

Steady trade was recorded at the sale with 71 animals entered, 63 forwarded and 57 sold.  10 yearling heifers were sold as late entries at the end of the sale.  A total of 6 bulls and 51 females were sold from the catalogued section which saw a clear indication that there is demand for bulls.

1 bull 12 – 18 months sold for 2,200gns

6 bulls averaged 2,500gns

 

2 females over 3 years averaged 1,300gns

31 females 2 -3 years averaged 882gns

16 females 1-2 years averaged 708gns

 

2 females under 1 year old averaged 650gns.

 

51 females averaged 835gns

57 animals in total averaged 1,010gns
