Polled Welsh Black Cattle Club gets ready for autumn open day

Two herds of polled pedigree Welsh Black cattle will be available for inspection at an open day on September 13 th organised by the Polled Welsh Black Cattle Club.

The open day will start at 10.30am at Nant-y-Moch, Gwynfe, Llangadog in Carmarthenshire where visitors will be able to view Colin and Rhian Evans' Rhuddel Herd.

Established in 1998 the herd has had a number of notable successes including winning the Welsh Black Breed championship at the 2003 and 2006 Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

In 2007 Rhuddel Joseph, a home bred bull, was sold to Denmark, and another Rhuddel bull and two heifers have been selected for export to Denmark this year together with a heifer destined for Germany.

The second farm visit of the day will be to Cefn Don Farm, Hirwaun near Aberdare, owned by Mr & Mrs Hywel Davies & family.

The visit to the Morlais Herd - which was established in 1973 - will include inspection of the two herds of spring and autumn calving cows and breeding bulls.

Of special interest will be the farm's group of spring calving heifers which calved at two years of age and which will have their calves at foot.

Also of interest is the fact the animals are loose housed in winter on woodchips which are composted and re-used.

Following the open day visitors are invited to the Ty Newydd Country Hotel for afternoon tea around 4pm when there will be a chance for a discussion on the farm visit and an up-date regarding the opportunities open to Polled Welsh Black breeders .
