YOUNG BULLS TAKE DOLGELLAU SALE BY THE HORNS
Buyers from far and wide headed for Dolgellau and the Welsh Black Cattle Society's Spring Pedigree Breeding Sale on Friday (May 5, 2006).
Although one of the smallest sales in terms of cattle entries in the Society's sale calendar, WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew James, said the enthusiasm witnessed by breeders was "a healthy indication of the demand for Welsh Black cattle."
Of the 38 animals entered, 32 were forwarded and 28 sold - namely 8 bulls and 20 females.
Sharing the top price of the day of 4,700gns were two young home bred bulls, Penwernhir Rhos 2 nd and Neuadd Hebog 179 th .
The two year-old Penwernhir Rhos 2 nd was sired by Chwaen Erddyn 137 th and it out of Nantrhys Ethel 5 th . Weighing 830kgs he was placed third in the pre-sale show.
Bred and sold by Doug Rowbotham, Pernwernhir, Pontrhydfendigaid, Ystrad Meurig, Ceredigion, Penwernhir Rhos 2 nd is a half brother to last year's WBCS Bull of the Year, Penwernhir Sambo who sold for 4,800gns in the Society's November 2005 sale.
Penwernhir Rhos 2 nd was bought by Enzo Sauro, Cwmberem, Pontyberem, Llanelli.
At 17 months of age Neuadd Hebog 179 th was the youngest bull sold at the sale.
Sired by Neuadd Hebog 136 th and out of Neuadd Ethel 170 th he weighed in at 710kgs producing a daily liveweight gain of 1.38kg.
Bred by Mr D William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys, Taliesin, Machynlleth, the bull was bought by Mr D H Roberts, Bryndreiniog, Penybontfawr, Oswestry.
Selling for 4,000gns was Gwern-Cynyddion Rhys 37 th . The 25 ½ month-old bull weighed 930kgs and took the Reserve Champion Bull title in the pre-sale show.
Sired by Seisiog Rhys 39 th and out of Gwern-Cynyddion Neli 3 rd , he was bred and sold by Robert John Evans, Gwern-Caernyddion, Llanbedr, Gwynedd, and bought by Mr & Mrs E. LL and M Williams, Dolaugwyn, Tywyn, Gwynedd. Mr Williams later went on to buy a second bull - Gerddi Brenin, a two year-old organic and Elite Health Status bull bred by Elwyn Pryce Evans, Gerddo Bluog Harlech, for which he paid 2,000gns.
While Robert John Evans sold the 20 month-old Gwern-Cynyddion Cai 5 th for 3,600gns to Mr R T Richards, Bron-Llan, Llansannan, Denbighshire. The bull weighed 700kgs with a daily liveweight gain of 1.18kg and was sired by Machreth Cai 7 th (AI) and was out of Gwern-Cynyddion Elen.
The Champion Bull at the pre- sale show was the 17 ½ month-old home bred bull, Gravel Henry. Weighing in at 710kgs with a daily liveweight gain of 1.35kgs, he was sold for 3,200gs by Ken Hughson & Partners, Ty Mawr, Newbridge-on-Wye, Llandrindod Wells.
Sired by Gravel Andrew 2 nd and out of Caerynwch Mai 61 st the bull was bought by Mr W and Mrs JG Griffiths, Bodlondeb, Nanhoron, Pwllheli.
Rounding off the bull section was 21 month-old Rhys Hefin 10 th which sold for 2,500gns.
Bred and sold by Mr and Mrs ASR Rees, Cae Mawr Farm, Llanbedr, Dyffryn Clwyd, Ruthin, the organic and Elite Health Status bull weighed 740kgs with a daily liveweight gain of 1.13kg. He was bought by ADAS, Pwllpeirian, Cwmystwyth, Aberystwyth.
The Champion Female title went to Neuadd Ethel 216 th , a 2 ½ year-old in-calf heifer to Nantrhys Eilir 2 nd . Sired by Brysgaga Erddyn 31 st and out of Neuadd Ethel 177 th , the heifer was bred by and sold for 1,200gns by William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys. She was bought by Robert Williams, Penywern, Talybont, Ceredigion, who is the WBCS President Elect.
Mr Jenkins also sold Neuadd Cati 350 th , a 2 ½ year-old in-calf heifer to Nantrhys Eilir 2 nd , for 1,000gns.
The Reserve Champion Female was bought by Messrs D J Davies & Son, Panteryrod, Llwyncelyn, Aberaeron.
Meanwhile, the Champion Maiden Heifer, CwmCae Ester 104 th , sold for 1,220gns
The 26 month-old was sire by Sylen Ifor and out of CwmCae Ester 50 th . Bred and sold by Trefor Jones, CwmCae, Llandre, Bow Street , Aberystwyth, she was bought by the assistant judge at the pre-sale show, Tomos Evans.
Tomos of Fferm Coedhirion, Llanddarog, Carmarthenshire is a first year student at Harper Adams Agricultural College .
It certainly was a day for the sale of bulls, and it was a good sale for everyone, "said Andrew James.
"While cattle numbers entered and sold were down compared to previous years the averages were up.
"Cattle herd health testing confirms the value to buyers and members who were rewarded with good prices."
