PEIRAN PEDRO IN POLL POSITION AT LLANDOVERY SALE


There was no mistaking the star of the show at the Welsh Black Cattle Society's annual pedigree sale at Llandovery yesterday (October 12, 2006) as Peiran Pedro topped the sale with a 2,500gns price tag.

The 6 year-old home bred bull from ADAS Holdings, Pwllpeiran, Cwmystwyth near Aberystwyth, weighed in excess of 1,200kgs, and was bought by Gareth and Jane Davies, Maes-y-Castell, Taliaris, Llandeilo.

Sired by Neuadd Addewid 63rd (AI) and out of Peiran Ewig 52nd, Pedro's individual performance records at 100 - 200 through to 300 days were impressive with weights of 179kgs, 319kgs and 402kgs respectively.

The champion Bull in the pre-sale show was Cennen Dafydd 5th. Weighing 1,000kgs and selling for 2,100gns, the home bred bull was sired by Cerdin Dafydd and is out of Cennen Siwan 11th.

Bred and sold by Messrs JR & DH Francis, Tynywaun, Gwynfe, Llangadog, he was bought by Messrs SC & CE Mogford, Glyn Gwilym Farm, Resolven, Neath.

Leading the female prices was 18month-old maiden heifer Lucton Ellen 2nd, going under the hammer for 2,000gns, also winning the Champion Maiden Heifer title and the JP Rees Memorial Perpetual Trophy.

Bred and sold by Mr & Mrs Chris Thorpe, Yew Tree House, Lucton, Leominster, Hereford, she was bought by Nigel Morgans, Park View, Trevaughan, Whitland. The heifer was sired by Lucton Brenin and out of Hafodesgob Ellen 25th.

Selling at 1,680gns was an in-calf heifer, Cennen Angharad 30th. Sired by Cerdin Dafydd and out of Cennen Angharad 28th, the heifer was bred and sold by Messrs Francis Tynywaun, Gwynfe; the heifer was bought by WBCS President, Robert Williams, Penywern, Talybont, Ceredigion.

At 1,600gns, Crwys Mali 2nd, was bought by WBCS Deputy Young Member Ambassador, Aled Thomas, Llechwedd, Tyn Lon, Holyhead.

Sired by Crwys Hebogwr and out of Cwm-Clydan Guinevere 2nd, the home-bred in calf heifer was sold by Messrs Evans, Gelli, Llancrwys, Llanwrda. Messrs Evans sold a total of 6 females - 3 in calf heifers and 3 maiden heifers - which averaged 961gns/head.

Dolithon Bethwyn 9th, was bought by Hugh Crossley, Somerleyton, Lowestoft in Suffolk for 1,300gns, one of a total of 10 females he bought averaging 927gns.

Sired by Brysgaga Madog 4th and out of Dolithon Bethwyn 5th, she won first prize in her class and was sold by Mr F J Layton & Sons, Nantleach, Llandewi, Llandrindod Wells.

The Layton family also sold the Reserve Champion Maiden heifer - Dolithon Tanclys 17 for 1,200gns to Ioan Roberts, Tryfil Isaf, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey.

Completing the line up of top priced females were two in calf heifers from Mr D William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys, Taliesin, Machynlleth.

Neuadd Addawol 127th was sired by Brysgaga Erddyn 31st and out of Neuadd Addawol 118th, and was sold for 1,200gns to Hugh Crossley.

The Champion Female and Maes-y-Castell Perpetual Cup winner, Neuadd Gweno 84th. She was sired by Brysgaga Erddyn 31st and out of Neuadd Gweno 63rd and sold for 1,00gns to Messrs David, Dilys, and Dylan Morgan, Alltgoch, Talybont, Ceredigion who bought a total of 5 females averaging 976gns/head.

"The average sale prices were on a par with the 2005 sale," said a satisfied WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew James.

"The current climate in the beef sector with changes to payments in the suckler cow and Tir Mynydd schemes do have a direct impact on sale prices."

He continued," It is encouraging however to record the confidence in the number of young members - both from established and new herds - who are purchasing suckler beef cows on the basis of the breed's excellent mothering ability, hardiness and quality beef production.

"The future continues to look promising for the breed and Society."
