Welsh Blacks take on four nations at Carlisle
Welsh Black cattle have been dispatched to the four corners of the UK following the Welsh Black Cattle Society's sale at Carlisle on Friday (November 10).
The sale at the Borderway Mart, Rosehill is the Society's only sale outside of Wales , and attracted buyers from England , Northern Ireland , Scotland and Wales .
The Highest priced animal was the Champion Female, Rhiwlas Delyth 24 th .
In calf to Mynydd William 3 rd , she was sired by Iwrch Franc and out of Rhiwlas Delyth 16 th . Sold for 1,200gns to Mrs Sarah Preece, Lower Moor Farm, Bridekirk, Annan in Scotland , the heifer was bred and sold by Robin Price JP, DL, ARAgS, Rhiwlas, Bala.
The overall Champion of the day also picked up the Harrison & Hetherington Perpetual Trophy, the third year in a row a Welsh Black heifer from Robin Price has won the award.
Heading for her new home in Scotland was Nant-Ganol Gwenan 23 rd . In calf to Gerddi Bluog Meirion 2 nd , sired by Nant-Ganol Twm and out of Nant-Ganol Gwenan 4 th , she was sold for 950gns.
Bred and sold by regular Carlisle vendors Messrs Thomas Bros, Nant-Ganol, Rhiwlas, Oswestry, she was bought by Charlie and Andrea Walker, Barnside, Abbey Saint Bathans, Dunns in Berwickshire.
The Walkers bought a total of seven in-calf heifers, all from Messrs Thomas.
Another in-calf heifer heading north of the border was Rhiwlas Cherry 23 rd . Sired by Neuadd Cawr 273 rd and out of Rhiwlas Cherry 17th; she was sold for 850gns by Robin Price.
She was bought by Mactier Brothers, Cairndoon, Whithorn, Newton Stewart, Scotland , who bought a total of four females.
The Champion Maiden Heifer and Reserve Champion was Waedog Celynen 153 rd .
The 19 ½ month-old heifer was sired by Graig-Goch Berwyn 44 th and out of Waedog Celynen 121 st . Bred and sold by Emyr Wyn Jones, Rhiw Waedog, Rhosygwalia, Bala, she was bought for 900gns by David Anderson, Whitslade Farm, Ashkirk, Selkirk, who bought a total of five maiden heifers on the day.
The Highest Price Cow with Calf at Heel was 4 ½ year-old second calver, Machreth Mari 15 th . Sired by Hafodesgob Mered and out of Machreth Mari 12 th she was bred by Lewis R Williams and sold by Messrs Gareth and Diane James, Bernards Well Isaf, Tufton, Clarbeston Road , Pembrokeshire. She was sold with her bull calf at heel for 800gns to Gareth Stephens, Pentwd Uchaf, Cardigan, Ceredigion.
"It was a good sale, there were seven vendors from Wales and 13 buyers from across the UK ," said WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew James.
"Six extra females were sold at the sale as compared with 2005, with the averages down in 2006 as compared with the previous year.
"But, what was heartening was the number of buyers at the sale, with two first time Welsh Black buyers.
"The Carlisle sale is an important date in the Society calendar as the breed becomes recognised for its qualities which are valued by beef farmers in the border counties and Scotland .
"Special arrangements are in hand for 2007 and the 30 th sale at Carlisle ."
