HAFODESGOB CANDY BRINGS SWEET SUCCESS FOR GWENFAIR AT ABERGAVENNY SALE

It was ladies day at the Welsh Black Cattle Society's annual show and pedigree store sale (September 11) with females taking the top honours and prices.

Held at Abergavenny Market, the overall Breed Champion title on the day went to Hafodesgob Candy 10th, an 18 ½ month old heifer.

Bred by former WBCS President, Mrs Gwenfair Jones and Sons Hafod-yr-Esgob Isaf, Bala, it is the second year in succession the family has won the title.

The heifer was also awarded the Russel Smith Memorial Cup and £100 cash kindly given by the Society's President-elect, John Pratt, The Hillis Farm, Talgarth near Brecon.

Sired by Llwynsarn Cawr and out of Hafodesgob Candy 2nd, the prize winning heifer was sold for 1,120gns to Tony Evans of R. Evans & Son Waun-y-Mer, Kenfig near Bridgend.

Mr Evans also bought the Champion Female at the pre sale show, Neuadd Gweno 80th.

Bred and sold by Mr D William Jenkins, Neuadd-yr-Ynys, Taliesin, Machynlleth, the 7 month in-calf heifer picked up the O.J.Lewis Cup which was presented by Peter Lewis, Carreg Ddu, Heol Gerrug. Llanellen near Abergavenny in memory of his late father.

Sold for 1,200gns, the heifer was sired by Brysgaga Erddyn 31st and is out of Neuadd Gweno 52nd.

Neuadd Gweno 83rd, another in-calf heifer from William Jenkins was also sold to Tony Evans for 1,200gns.

Sired by Brysgaga Erddyn 31st and out of Neuadd Gweno 70th, the heifer confirmed the sale trend that quality always sells.

Hafodesgob Molly 87th, a 27 moth old maiden heifer was sold by Mrs Gwenfair Jones for 1,050gns to Gareth Stephens, Pentwyd Uchaf, Cardigan.

A second prize winner in the pre sale show, the heifer was sired by Fodlas Peredur 3rd and out of Hafodesgob Molly 43rd.

Another maiden heifer, Wye Janet 9th, sold for 980gns. The 25 moth-old heifer was bred by Mr & Mrs D Gwyn Jones, sold by Mrs Christine Carberry, Maple Crest, New inn, Llandeilo; and bought by Malcolm Watkins, Ty Du Farm, Llanarth, Raglan.

Making their debut and selling their first home bred animal since establishing their Gors-Goch herd in 2002, were Ian and Delyth John, Hors Goch, Cefn Abbey, Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire.

Gors-Goch Manon who is 7 ½ months in calf to Cerdin Dafydd (AI) and out of Dancoed Mair 5th sold for 780gns to Tony Evans who bought a total of five prize winning females at the sale.

The only bull at the sale was Dancoed Cymro 12th. The 18 month-old was sired by the former Bull of the Year, Seisiog Cymro 61st and out of Dancoed Mair 3rd. Bred by Gwynfryn and Marian Phillips, Can Coed, Cwm Gwaun, Abergwaun, the young bull was sold for 1,200gns to Lloyd Phillips, Llangeinor, Bridgend.

The main attractions at the sale were the five females aged 2-3 years which averaged 1,042gns a head. With half the cattle sold at the sale in the 1-2 year maiden section, the averages were down compared to previous years.

However, the sale witnessed a number of new buyers purchasing Welsh Black Cattle, including Anthony Hale, Kemeys Farm, Llantrisant near Usk who bought six yearling heifers averaging 308gns a head.

Mr Hale, who only visited the sale to view the trade, was "delighted with his new investment".

"The sale offered great opportunities for new and young members who have limited resources but wish to establish a beef herd as 80% of the cattle were mature cows and calves or yearling heifers," said WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew James.
