Welsh Blacks enjoy a 'Happy Halloween' at Dolgellau sale


Welsh Black Cattle enthusiasts put in a 'spirited' performance at the Society's Annual Autumn Pedigree Sale on October 31, 2006.

More than 100 pedigree breeding cattle went under the hammer at the sale at Dolgellau.

At 5,200gns the highest priced bull was in fact the youngest forwarded at the sale. Mynach Baron 2 nd , an 18 month-old homebred bull, was sold by Messrs A & RC Williams, Pentre, Cwmtirmynach, Bala.

Sired by Caerynwch Baron 6 th and out of Mynach Non 3 rd , the recently fertility tested bull was bought by Messrs G.G Jones a'i Gwmni, Llwyniorweth Uchaf, Capel Bangor, Aberystwyth.

Hafren Ebrillwr, which at 18 ½ months was the second youngest bull at the sale was bred and sold by Ms Emily Evans, Tynshettin, Llanwddyn, Oswestry.

The bull, which was sired by Cynon Carwyn (AI) and out of Seisiog Ceinlys 51 st was bought for 3,000gns by Messrs G. Evans & Son, Sylfaen Farm, Bermo, Gwynedd.

Two bulls shared the sale price of 2,400gns - Cynon Rhys and Bro-waen Hebog.

Cynon Rhys was sired by Cynon Carwyn and out of Cynon Alys, bred and sold by Messrs J & ES Davies, Cwmarch, Capel Cynon, Ffostrasol, Llandysul, the bull was bought by Messrs Davies Bros, Cae Iago, Llanwrin, Machynlleth.

Bro-waen Hebog was bred and sold by Alwyn Morris, Merddyn, Ceunant, Llanrug, Caernarfon, and bought by Geraint Wynne, Meifod Uchaf, Adyffryn Ardudwy, Gwynedd.

Sired by Gwern-Cynyddion Cai and out of Bro-waen Ethel 7 th , he also took the Reserve Champion Bull title.

Leading the female trade was the Champion Maiden Heifer, Hafodesgob Mynachwen 59 th .

The 27 month-old heifer was sired by Llwynsarn Cawr and out of Hafodesgob Mynachwen 48 th , and bred and sold by Mrs Gwenfair Jones & Sons, Hafod-yr-Esgob Isaf, Bala.

She was bought for 3,500gns by the assistant judge in the female section, Miss Amanda Johnson, Moelfre Isaf, Croesyceiliog, Carmarthen .

The Champion Female, Brysgaga Mari 41 st , was sold by Rowland Rees, Brysgaga, Bow Street , Aberystwyth for 2,400gns to WBCS Deputy Young Member Ambassador, Aled Thomas, Llechweed, Tyn Lon, Holyhead.

The 27 ½ month old in-calf heifer was sired by Ysguboriau Erddyn 45 th and out of Brysgaga Mari 24th .

Rowland Rees went on to sell another two prize winning heifers for 1,300gns and 1,250gns, both to Ioan Roberts, Tryfil Isaf, Llanerchymedd, Ynys Mon,

The first was Brysgaga Gweno 39 th . The 27 ½ month old in-calf heifer was sired by Neuadd Hebog 151 st and out of Brysgaga Gwenno 30 th .

The second was another 27 ½ month-old in-calf heifer, and Reserve Female Champion Brysgaga Addawol 38 th . Sired by Neuadd Hebog 151 st she was out of Brysgaga Addawel 30 th .

Both Brysgaga Gweno 39 th and Brysgaga Addawol 38 th are in-calf to Machreth Seimon 5 th .

It was a busy day for Mr Rees who sold five females averaging 1,306gns/head.

Meanwhile the highest price in the 1-2 year-old section was maiden heifer, Seisiog Dwynwen 61 st .

The 2 year-old was sired by Mynydd Morgan and out of Seisiog Dwynwen 52 nd . She was bred and sold by Goronwy Jones a'i Gwmni, Ty Newydd, Nebo, Llanrwst and bought for 1,400gns by David, Dilys and Dylan Morgan, Alltgoch, Talybont, Aberystwyth, who bought a total of four females averaging 1,050gns/head.

However, the star of the sale was Caerynwch Mai 72 nd , a 6 month-old heifer and first prize winner, which sold for 1,200gns.

Sired by Ysguboriau Bleddyn 38 th and out of Caerynwch Mai 55 th , she was bought by the assistant judge in the bull section, Tomos Ellis, Ynys For, Bryncrug, Tywyn, Gwynedd.

"The sale really belonged to the females who sold consistently well in all sections, which served to confirm the demand by farmers for Welsh Black breeding stock," said WBCS Chief Executive, Andrew James.

"Cattle were brought by farmers across England and Wales from Anglesey to Bridgend and Haverfordwest to Staffordshire and as far as Devon ; with prices up in comparison to the 2005 sale.

"It was the last sale of 2006 on Welsh soil, with the last sale of the season scheduled for Carlisle next Friday (November 10)"
