Centenary Fatstock Show for Centenary Breed at the Royal Welsh Agicultural Fair
The Welsh Black Cattle Society rounded off its centenary year by taking to the ring at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Winter Fair.
Eleven Society members supported the event with 19 steers competing in three classes.
The Champion Welsh Black Steer was the 17 + month-old Esgob Ior 4th from the Society's immediate past president, Mrs Gwenfair Jones, who with her sons has had five second prize placings with steers in the past three years.
The family were delighted with not only the first prize card but to receive the breed champion award from championship beef judge and Machynlleth butcher, William Lloyd Williams.
Selling for £3.10/kg to Enzo Sauro of Pontyberem, Llanelli, Esgob Ior 4 th made the highest price within the Welsh Black classes, reaching £1,822 in total and weighing 588kgs.
The 23 month-old Coedllys Wil took the Reserve Champion title, weighing in at 662kgs.
His owners, William and Meinir Davies, found themselves repeating last year's success at the Winter Fair where they also picked up the Reserve award.
The couple, who run an elite herd of 14 pedigree Welsh Black breeding cows, brought a total of five steers to the event.
Coedllys Wil sold for £1,125 (£1.70/kg) to former Society president, Meurig Rees, CBE, K.St.J, MSc, FRAgS, Escuan, Tywyn, Gwynedd.
Fodlas Now from Meredydd & Nerys Ellis, Hafod Ifan, Ysbyty Ifan, Betws-y-Coed, Gwynedd, took top honours in the Junior Steer class, one of six competing steers weighing between 430 and 540kgs.
Meanwhile, in the Intermediate Steer class, seven steers weighing between 546kgs and 620kgs competed for the honours, with first place going to Esgob Ior 4 th , the eventual over all Welsh Black champion.
The Senior Steer title went to Coedllys Wil, who was among six steers weighing between 626kgs and 740kgs to compete in the class.
“It was a good show, with excellent quality entries,” said WBCS chief executive, Andrew James.
“The Winter Fair is a great way to round off the year's activities in Wales, more so this year as it has been our centenary and also that of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.
“We are now looking forward to the Royal Smithfield Show in London which starts tomorrow (Thursday, December 2) at which the Welsh Black breed will be represented by four steers from three Society members.”
