The Royal Welsh show 2018 took place Monday 23rd July to Thursday 26th July amid a heat wave! The Society had a busy week and is thankful to the President, Mr Brian Thomas, wife Ffiona and other members who helped man the stand.
The Welsh Black classes were sponsored by NFU Mutual Insurance Society Ltd and the Judge was Mr Gwilym Jones, Hendre Bach, Cwmtirmynach, Bala.
Winning Bull and Champion Welsh Black was Tryfil Caleb exhibited by Jenkins family, Cerrigcaranau. Tryfil Caleb was also winner of the OG Thomas Memorial Trophy, this year presented by Society President, Mr Brian Thomas. This was topped off by winning the Queen's Cup.
Champion female was Eirianfa Ebrill 7th, exhibited by Ms Eirian Lewis, Glandulas Isaf, Lampeter.
The Welsh Blacks also won the Team of 3 Championship with Blackmixen Excalibur, Blackmixen Tabitha Twitchit and Blackmixen Ulu exhibited by Robin and Jo Ransome, Knighton. The Team of 5 also resulted in a Reserve prize for the Welsh Black team.
The Marian Centenary Bowl for the best Pair of animals, one male and one female, property of the same breeder was won by Tryfil Caleb and Caran Del 6th from Jenkins, Cerrigcaranau.
The Society’s Group of 5 animals was Reserve Champions.
A Welsh Black Young Handler Competition was held on Wednesday ably judged by Mr Vince Corbett who is a Charolais breeder. The Competition was sponsored by Mr Glyn Jones who presented winners Angharad Davies, Coedllys Herd and Cai Jones, Hafodesgob Herd, with rosettes and a cash prize of £30 and £20. Both youngsters went on to compete in the Royal Welsh Young Handler Competition - so well done to you both.
On Monday a book launch was held at the Society stand to launch ‘Will and the Welsh Black’ a story by Phil Okwedw, who read a short extract for a group of children. The book can be purchased from Gomer Press.
