7,200gns for the highest priced animal at the 58th Winter Show and Sale at Dolgellau

 As the weather is so wet and dreary at the moment is was good to get out and see lots of vendors, buyers and people supporting the first Welsh Black sale of the year at Dolgellau on 7th January.  Sponsored by both Farmers Guardian and Tithebarn the Farmers Mart market was busy.  The pre-sale show was judged by Mr Edward Williams and assisted by the junior judge of the day Mr Guto Owen.

 Champion Female was Lot 6 from Mr Richard Hughes, Rafon Herd, Glanrafon, Bodorgan, Anglesey. This was Rafon Bet 11th, an August 2010 heifer that had been served by Iwrch Sam and was due mid march. The heifer was sired by Rafon Huw and out of Rafon Bet 7th and she sold for 1,500gns to Mr C R Oates, Rosuick Farm, Helstonwall, St Martin, Cornwall.  Other females born before May 2011 made 1,100gns for  Eidda Molly 10th from Elfed Williams, Betws-y-coed selling to new buyer Mr Straughan and son ,Hill Head Farm, Dalton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Coedllys Mirabella 19th, from Mr William Davies, made 1,020gns

 Moving onto the maiden heifers it was Lot 18, the heifer of Mr Emyr and Gerwyn Jones, Graig-Goch,  Nebo, Llanrwst that went on to be the Champion.  This smart heifer, Graig-Goch Marian 53rd, born July 2012, out of Graig-Goch Marian 39th and sired by Ysguboriau Banner 7th was sold to now regular purchaser Mr John Taverner, Farley Farm, Great Haywood, Staffs for 2,000gns. Mr Taverner also went on to buy the reserve champion maiden heifer, which also came from Emyr and Gerwyn Jones, Lot 17 - Graig-Goch Marion 52nd.  This very similar heifer, born July 2012, was sired by the same bull and out of Graig-Goch Marian 31st and sold for 1,650gns.   

 There were some nice strong maidens, Ms Emily Evans, Tynshettin, Llanwrddin, Oswestry sold Gwern-Cynyddion Rose, Lot 12, for 1,700gns to Mr R Bebb, Llwyndolithel, Talyllyn, Tywyn.  T & J Jones, Ty-Newydd, Nebo, Denbs sold Seisiog Bet 139th (Lot 13) for 1,380gns to Miss Ruth Tudor, Trealy Farm, Mitchell, Monmouth.  Graig-Goch Marian 51st sold for 1,350gns to Mr Nigel Birt-Llewellin, Rosehill, Slebech, Havordfordwest, others for 1,250gns, 1,220gns, 1,140gns, 1,100gns and 1,020gns,  and three of those going to Mr Straughan again for his herd in Northumberland. 

Young heifers sold well, 980gns for Caerynwch Mai 90th from Mr T W Williams, Caerynwch Farm, Dolgellau, and winning first prize in the Young Heifer class was Bro-Waen Sami, Lot 23, from Mr Alwyn Morris, Merddyn, Ceunant Llanrug, Gwynedd.  This heifer, sired by Graig-Goch Berwyn 29th and out of Bro-Waen Buddig 4th, was a May born heifer and was sold for 900gns to LL Roberts, Waterloo Service Station, Penrefail, Crossroads, Abergele.

 Moving on to the bulls there were some well grown young bulls on offer.  The Champion Bull was the youngest in the entries and that was Lot 56, the last in the catalogue. Deiniolen Major 3rd from Mr Michael Wyn Jones, Tyddyn Perthi, Penisarwaen, Caernarfon was a January 2013 bull sired by Caerynwch Major 6th and out of Deiniolen Non 17th that sold for 3,200gns to A J and E A Price, Ddyfadfa Isaf, Gwynfa, Llangadog, Carms.  Reserve champion bull went to Mr Ioan Roberts, Tryfil Herd, Tryfil Isaf, Llanerchymedd, Anglesey with Tryfil Grand Slam, Lot 33.  This March 2012 bull, sired by Ysguboriau Bleddyn 79th and out of Tryfil Rosella, was sold to Mr Gareth Davies, Maes y Castell, Taliaris, Llandeilo for 5,000gns.

 Top price for a bull however went to Lot 41 - Gwern-Cynyddion Nathan 2nd sold by Mr Robert John Evans, Gwern Caernyddion, Llanbedr, Gwynedd.  The May 2012 born bull, sired by Machreth Nathan 11th and out of Gwern-Cynyddion Grug, sold to Huw Williams, Dolaugwyn, Bryncrug, Tywyn, Gwynedd for 7,200gns.

 Llwynsarn Black Prince, Lot44, from Mr H W Jones, Llwynsarn, Rhydymain, Dolgellau sold for 4,600gns to E W and M M Jenkins, Tyn y Graig, Talybont, Ceredigion.  Lot 53, Obell Cynwch 2nd, from Messrs Edward Roberts and sons, Ty Mawr Farm, Dolgellau sold to Mr Alun Vaughan, Moel Iwrch Uchaf, Nebo, Llanrwst for 3,800gns. The next one selling for 3,800gns was Brysgaga Berwyn 8th from Mr Rowland Rees Brysgaga Bow Street Ceredigion.  The May 2012 bull sired by Penwernhir Seraff and out of Brysgaga Gwenno 48th was sold to Jones Bros, Rhiwaedog, Rhosygwaliau, Bala, Gwynedd .  Mr Rees also sold another bull for 3,400gns to R Clare, Turnant Welsh Blacks, Lower Turnant Farm, Longtown. Herefordshire.   A few other bulls sold for 3,000gns, 2,700gns and 2,500gns.
